Imphal, October 22 2021:
Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union (MGWU) has appealed to all the chairmen of Gorkha villages in Kangpokpi district to discourage illegal plantations of poppy, ganja (marijuana) etc., in areas under their respective jurisdiction.
In a release, MGWU information and publicity secretary Vigyan Koirala conveyed that a consultative meeting of its office-bearers called by SP Kangpokpi Karthik Malladi on 'poppy plant destruction' was held on Thursday.
The Union believes that illegal cultivation of poppy is a serious offence and menace to the society, it added.
MGWU continued that as per the resolution taken in the meeting, village chairmen of Gorkha villages and general public were requested not to practice poppy or ganja plantations and destroy it at the earliest if already planted.
The Union will provide awareness on various alternative livelihood means like pisciculture, sericulture, apiary, dairy farming and other government schemes with the help of state administration, it assured.
MGWU also emphasised that it supports the government's policy of 'War on Drugs' and will extend its fullest cooperation.
It also urged all likeminded citizens to cooperate and guide anyone engaged in poppy cultivation to shift to other decent livelihood activities.
