Mao, June 18 2015 :
In the midst of growing fears and speculations of NSCN-K cadres intruding into Senapati district, villages located around the 35 Assam Rifles Company heard loud sounds of gun shots from automatic rifles last night.
The 35 AR company is near the famous Mao potato farm which is also home to JNV School.
Though sources could not ascertain the exact cause of the firing which began around 11pm and continued till 2 in the morning, it is suspected that some gun battle ensued between armed militant group and AR Jawans.
After the June 4 ambush at Chandel where NSCN-K and other militant groups killed 18 army jawans and injured dozens, all army establishments and camps have beefed up security with frequent frisking and operations in deep jungles and border areas.
According to Mao villagers, since the past one week, Assam Rifles has been on high alert and regular patrolling is witnessed on daily basis.
With reports of NSCN-K groups likely to sneak into Manipur through the porous areas of Mao bordering Nagaland, AR jawans are everywhere these days, confirmed our sources.
