Imphal, December 17 2024:
A team of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR), led by its chairperson Keisam Pradipkumar, visited several relief camps in Jiribam district recently to assess the conditions of displaced children residing in these relief shelters.
Officials from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Jiribam, accompanied the team during the visit.
The MCPCR team, which has been stationed in Jiribam since Sunday, is evaluating whether the displaced children have access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and protection.
Speaking to the media, Pradipkumar informed that the commission's findings will be compiled into a report and submitted to the relevant authorities for necessary action.
On Tuesday, the commission also conducted its first camp sitting in the district at the conference hall of the DC office.
The session, chaired by a bench comprising Pradipkumar and two members, heard complaints and testimonies from 36 representatives, including members of civil society organisations, victim families, Meira Paibi Lups, and student bodies.
Among the concerns raised was the plight of 12 students living in a relief camp near Borobekra police station, four (girls) of whom are preparing for the upcoming matriculation examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BSEM) .
The representatives urged the commission to provide the students with safe and secure accommodations to ensure they can prepare for the exams without fear.
Other complaints included a lack of medical professionals and infrastructure at Jiribam Hospital, which has posed significant challenges for institutional childbirth, partic ularly for expecting mothers.
Additionally, concerns were raised about the absence of adequate state security forces in vulnerable areas, with many residents expressing fears that normalcy cannot be restored without their deployment.
The family members of six individuals who were abducted and murdered by Kuki militants also highlighted that they have yet to receive the death certificates of the deceased.
The commission plans to hold another sitting on Wednesday to address further complaints and testimonies.
Following the sittings, MCPCR will issue directives to the government authorities to address the issues raised during the visit.
