Discourse on gender violence held

An awareness programme on the atrocities committed towards women and the means to prevent the same was jointly organised by Langjing Meira VLF, Mangalleibi VLF and Erik VLF Thiyam at Utlou Mayai Leikai Indoor Hall, on Thursday.
The programme held under the theme "Elimination of Gender-based Violence" under the auspices of Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission of the department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, was attended by Utlou Gram Panchayat pradhan Naorem Inao Devi and SISD MSRLM district coordinator Thokchom Somiya Devi as presidium members while District Bar Association, Bishnupur president W Lata Devi and member secretary of District Literacy Mission Authority Bishnupur District Th Renubala Devi were resource persons of the event.
Speaking at the event, Thokchom Somiya mentioned that the programme aimed at addressing gender-based violence and atrocities against women was organised as part of the Nupi Lal observance which celebrates the contributions of women to society.
In her address, W Lata Devi observed that the concept that women are the weaker sex has changed and women are now considered equal to men in diverse sectors.
She said that the government of India has empowered women in its efforts to create a more equal society.
"Towards this end, appropriate actions are being taken against individuals involved in crimes against women and children," she remarked.
Lata Devi also acknowledged the significant role women play in Manipuri society, noting that their contributions are widely recognised.
Women are central to the development of society and play a crucial role in its progress, she added.
