IIIT Manipur observes Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav

In remembrance of Tamil poet, writer, journalist and freedom fighter in the Independence movement Subramania Bharati popularly known as "Mahakavi Bharathi", IIIT Manipur organised Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav 2024 .
The day is celebrated to promote dissemination of mother tongues to all and create maximum awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity amongst the people speaking many languages.
The function held at the IIIT Manipur city campus in Mantripukhri was attended by former AIR director Dr Cheyon and IIIT Manipur director Professor Krishnan Bhaskar as chief guest and president respectively while motivational speaker and writer Bharathy Bhaskar was the guest of honour of the function.
Bharathy attended the function online where she gave an insightful lecture about the contributions of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Cheyon highlighted the contributions made by Bharati for women's empowerment citing some of his poems.
He also shared his experience of witnessing the Ima market in Manipur, the only women market in the world and pondered upon how Mahakavi Subramania Bharati would have reacted if he had come to Manipur and seen Ima market.
The formal event concluded with the prize distribution ceremony for the Quiz and Sketch competitions.
The first, second and third prize for both competitions carried cash of Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 each along with certificates of appreciation.
For the Sketch competition, a consolation prize of Rs 1000 was also presented to two of the participants.
Tamil film 'Bharathi', a biographical account on the life of Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiar, was also screened on the occasion.
