Imphal, June 09 2022:
While appreciating the initiatives taken up by Chief Minister N Biren Singh against the drug menace in the state, Manipur Democratic Alliance (MDA) has stated that the number of widows and orphans resulting from drug abuse could have been significantly lower if Biren had become the Chief Minister much earlier.
Addressing a press meet held at the office of Shiv Sena Manipur Unit, Babupara here on Thursday, MDA convenor M Tombi said that the Alliance will extend full support to the CM's measures against the drug menace, stating that the proactive attitude of the ruling government is satisfying.
The government's efforts towards afforestation and protection of the environment are also appreciated, he said, while expressing his dismay over some groups' objection to planting of trees.
Further expressing support to the CM's future activities with regard to resolving key issues of the state, Tombi appealed to all concerned not to restrict planting of trees or make religious statements.
He then urged all not to assume things about MDA over its support of the government, stating that the party does discriminate on any good works undertaken.
While claiming that people from Myanmar were the first to plant poppies in Manipur, the convenor said that he does not want to turn the history pages on who is right or wrong.
Regarding the national highways, Tombi said that repeated memorandums have been submitted to the PM.
Many culprits have been released despite getting apprehended red-handed.
However, the CM's recent move of deploying GSP-tagged vehicles along NH-37 is a good step, he remarked and further appreciated the assurance that the 11 IRB will be deployed as Highway Protection Force after the declaration of the recruitment results.
"If the present government led by the CM had come to power much earlier, many lives could have been saved.
Vehicles would not have been razed to the ground, many would not be widowed or orphaned, and there would almost be zero cases 'of abduction for ransom purposes", Tombi stated, while urging the government to construct more bridges along Jiri route and to upgrade Tongjin Maril to a national highway.
