Imphal, February 03 2025:
Five Congress legislators led by CLP leader Okram Ibobi Singh called on Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan here on Monday around 1 pm and submitted a memorandum, condemning the alleged threat made by chief minister N Biren Singh against its members.
The legislators also urged the Governor to advise the government.
Speaking to newspersons after meeting the Governor, Ibobi referred to alleged remarks by the CM which have gone viral on social media platforms, threatening 'if the opposition initiates the no-confidence motion against the government, then the members supporting it would face public backlash, making it difficult for them to even stay in their own homes".
Ibobi said that this compelled the Congress leaders to meet the Governor, labelling the statements as 'unbecoming' of a leader.
The same is also violating and threatening the rights of the members and the Rule of Procedure Conduct of Business, he noted.
Ibobi continued that a no-confidence motion is mostly moved from the opposition side, depending on whether the time is right or not.
As such, the team met the Governor to urge the latter to advise the government not to resort to such disrespectful actions, he added.
Stating that neither the party nor the members would back down just because of the CM's threats, the former chief minister said that one should have the basic ability to keep quiet and understand why the motion is being moved instead of mocking the same.
The opposition leader maintained that Congress will continue to obey, respect and protect the Constitution and democracy but cautioned that in case of any unwanted consequences then the government shall be held accountable, considering that prior information has already been provided to the Governor.
The other team members consisted of deputy CLP K Ranjit, MPCC president K Meghachandra, MLA Th Lokeshwar and MLA O Surjakumar.
