First bamboo crushing unit inaugurated

In a step toward promoting sustainable agriculture in Northeast India, the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC), in collaboration with Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, inaugurated a bamboo crushing unit, the first such facility of the state, at Ngairangbam Mamang Ching, Imphal West district on Friday.
The project is supported by the North Eastern Council under the Ministry of DoNER.
Informing this in a press statement, AIMS said that the inauguration was led by NEC advisor (horticulture) Mangsatabam Iboyaima in the presence of NECBDC managing director MC Omi Ningshen, College of Food Technology dean Prof Ng Iboyaima, CSIR-NEIST chief scientist Dr Huidrom Birkumar, AIMS president Mayanglambam Khelendro, and director Dr Atom Sunil.
The bamboo crushing unit will produce bamboo powder, which will be utilised in integrated farming system, marking the first such initiative in India.
The project aims to use bamboo powder as a sustainable feed supplement for livestock, natural fertiliser for crops, and ammonia absorbent for fish ponds.
This integrated approach is expected to increase agricultural yield, reduce farming costs, and advance eco-friendly practices across the region.
In his address, Iboyaima highlighted the project's role in transforming agricultural practices in Northeast India, stating that the inauguration of the bamboo crushing unit marks an important landmark in agricultural innovation for the region.
Harnessing bamboo and local resources paves the way for integrated farming that contributes to the socio-economic development of rural communities, he said.
MC Omi Ningshen emphasised the potential impact on the local economy and the region's sustainability, saying that this project can generate numerous opportunities for local communities and help promote the region toward a more prosperous and sustainable future.
The new bamboo crushing unit is set to create job opportunities and foster growth in rural communities, furthering the region's commitment to sustainable development and a greener future, the statement added.
