Minister vows to evict illegal structures

Stating that eviction of unauthorised structures constructed along the Naga Nullah route is undervyay and will continue, Water Resource minister Awangbow Newmai informed the House that the eviction drive against public and private structures constructed along river banks and catchment areas will be carried out after verification of relevant documents.
Responding to a query raised by Congress MLA K Ranjit of Sugnu assembly constituency on the first day of the Sixth session of 12tn Manipur Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, minister Awangbow informed that total of 256 unauthorised structures, including community halls and oil pumps, have been identified along the banks of Imphal River, from Heingang to Lilong.
The eviction drive of these structures will begin once document verification is completed, in accordance with the Manipur Flood Plain Zoning-Act of 1978.The minister further informed the House that under the Manipur Flood Plain Zoning Act of 1978, no structures are allowed within 55 metres from the river s centre or 6 metres from the riverbank.
The eviction process has faced delays due to lack of public cooperation.
The department is also unaware of the sources of funding for these illegal constructions.
Nevertheless, the verification process continues as mandated by the flood zoning regulations.
Currently, the government is carrying out eviction operations along Naga Nullah, starting from Namdulongr and this work will continue, he elaborated.
