Imphal, August 28 2022:
All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) president Pheiroijam Nando Luwang has urged the state government to reconsider its decision to legalise liquor in the state while it continues to push forward the 'War on Drugs' campaign.
Volunteers of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, All Manipur Women s Voluntary Association (AMWOVA), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) and AMUCO jointly took out a torch rally from Tiddim Ground till Keishampat against drugs on Sunday night.
During the rally, slogans such as 'End drug menace in Manipur', 'Savefuture generations', etc., were raised.
Speaking on the sidelines, Pheiroijam Nando Luwang pointed out that liquor is a form of intoxicant.
While the government is planning to legalise liquor in the state, it has also been pushing for its 'War on Drugs' campaign, which is rather contradictory.
Legalising an intoxicant for the sake of earning some income is not a good step and as such, the government needs to seriously consider its decision on the matter, he asserted.
He continued that the people of Manipur have always protested against the drug menace, which is now the biggest reason behind youth losing their lives after the sporadic killings under AFSPA.
Thus, he urged for concerted efforts to save the future of the state from the clutches of drugs.
Nando then condemned the decision to legalise liquor and suggested the government to take up stringent action including taking up alternative projects that could generate income for the state, adding that drugs are often the cause behind various crimes.
Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur president L Memchoubi stated that the rally was organised as part of AMUCO, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, AMWOVA and MSF's joint efforts to put an end to the drug menace in the state.
She then informed that similar protests would be carried out in the future so as to prevail upon the government to ban drugs in each district of the state.
