Imphal, July 27 2013 : The Kargil Vijay Diwas was observed in Imphal on Friday to honour the Kargil war heroes.

Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, PHE Minister I Hemochandra, Chief Secretary DS Poonia and other top officials attended the glittering function held at the Secretariat South Block to mark the day.

Speaking at the occasion, Chief Minister Ibobi called for a firm stand to one and all to safeguard the oneness and freedom of the country and to pay rich tribute to the Kargil War heroes who had died martyred for their motherland.

On this day, July 26, 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistani intruders.

The Kargil War was fought for more than 60 days, ended on July 26 and resulted in the loss of life on both sides, India and Pakistan.

Pakistan retreated after international diplomatic pressure.
