Imphal, December 26 2023:
Sanasabi village in Imphal East district, which is about 25 km from the capital city Imphal is a foothill Meetei settlement surrounded by Kuki villages.
Since outbreak of the ethnic violence on May 3, armed Kukis have been resorting to random firing towards the village but without no signs of the state government initiating preventive measures forcing the village menfolk to defend their village with any available weapons.
While expressing strong resentment over alleged indifferent attitude, the villagers demanded that the government deploy police commandos or IRB for security.
Speaking to CCIAN Forum Peace Committee during their visit to the village for providing relief materials on Sunday, one Lambamayum Inaocha informed that the village is surrounded by Kuki villages like Simol, Samusong, Chingdai, Lokchao and Koune Urangpat.
With the firm resolve to thwart bid by the Kukis to lay siege on the village, the male members have been protecting it, especially since May 7 when armed Kukis started firing towards the village almost every day.
While almost all the women and children have left for safer locations, groups of 10/20 men who stayed behind get clustered in brick walled houses when faced with attacks, he revealed.
Inaocha also lamented that despite frequent attacks by Kuki militants, the government has not taken up any step for the security of the villagers or extended items of necessity.
Though central security forces are stationed nearby the village there has been no respite from firing, he claimed and suggested that the government deploy police commando or IRB to ease fear and apprehension gripping the villages.
Inaocha also thanked CCIAN Forum Peace Committee for providing relief material as benevolent individuals and CSOs are reluctant to foray into the village due to frequent firing by armed Kukis.
