Imphal, October 26 2012:
"Umang-Lai Haraoba festival was taken seriously in the past with enthusiasm but from the last few years the festival is on the declining stage.
The main reason for this is due to the lack of discipline among the youth of the state", said W.Mera Singh, Deputy Director of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur.
He was speaking as the chief guest during the inaugural function of two-day long seminar on "Impact on Umang-Lai Haraoba in Manipuri Tradition", 2012 being organized by the Forward Artistes Centre En-Camped (FACE) which was held at Manipur Press Club today.
.WMera further said Umang-Lai Haraoba is closely linked with the State's ancient tradition and added that continous helding of the festival will help in studying the State's rich tradition by the future generation.
While speaking as president of the function, L.Iboyaima Singh, chairman of FACE stated that the festival of Umang-Lai Haraoba is being held to preserve and study the ancient tradition of the State informing that art and culture show will be the main component of the festival.
"It is high time to safeguard the tradition of the State from getting extinct.
The present generation should also extend co-operastion in preserving this.
Moreover, the mixing of the State's tradition with western tastes has tarnished the image of our rich tradition", he added.
On the first day of the seminar, B.Kullachandra Sharma, Mutum Churamani and Ngariyanbam Kerani spoke on the theme "Manipurda khubam yariba Umang-Laishing gi makhalsing amasung khennabading gi mashak", Umang-Lai Haraobagi kannaba amadi oihan-ningba mashakshing and Lai Haraobagi kanglonda touheiba touheidabashing" respectively.
