ADC ex-VC Nehminthang to contest polls

Former vice chairman of Churachandpur ADC Nehminthang alias Thangboi has declared his candidature for the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election from Singhat assembly constituency.
The declaration was made during a public function held on Friday at Henglep community hall and attended by more than 80 village chiefs, church leaders and large numbers of his supporters from different villages.
Addressing the gathering, Nehminthang expressed his desire to work f6r real development in Singhat areas and bring the constituency to the path of development while stressing the need for establishing higher secondary schools in Singhat.
Successive governments neglected Singhat and hence most of the roads in the constituency including the one linking with the sub-divisional headquarters remained non-metalled till date, he contended.
Stressing the need for giving solid backing to Hill Areas Committee (HAC) in its fight for justice and tribal rights, Nehminthang said tribal communities need to maintain unity as their rights are at stake and ownership of their lands in jeopardy.
There are problems with respect to forest and even boundaries and hence tribals need to back the HAC and stand together to save lands, he said and urged one and all to stand firm for protecting their rights.
Expressing concern over improper functioning of PHSC/Nehminthang said that absence of good road is responsible for prolonged deprivation of basic infrastructure which previous MLAs failed to create.
He then said tribals have lands where farming of different types including horticulture can be undertaken successfully on large scale after acquiring training from experts in the field.
While clarifying that he has not been influenced by anyone to contest the election, Nehminthang said that he was compelled to join politics due to his genuine concern for the people about their pathetic conditions due to lack of development while stating he is also not concerned with making money.
Soon after his speech, a blessing prayer was administered byPastor George Kakai Khongsai during which all the pastors and village chiefs raised their hands as symbol of their support to him.
Red blankets were also presented to participating village chiefs' while a free medical camp was also conducted.
