Imphal, July 22 2024:
Apart from contending that the people of Manipur have no trust on the Assam Rifles (AR), Poirei Apunba Leimarol Meirapaibi (PALM) has demanded replacement of AR with a more equitable and efficient central force to guard the border with Myanmar.
According to a statement of PALM, apart from people of Manipur-suffering due to the 14 months long violence there were many instances of widespread protests against the Assam Rifles' partisan acts during the violence.
In areas where Central forces particularly the Assam Rifles are deployed, Kukis continue to attack Meetei villages contrary to which search operations are being conducted in the valley, alleged the Meira body while referring to the recent case of armed Kukis firing towards Thamnapokpi Meetei village from the nearby Uyokching hill followed by security forces
conducting searches at Thamnapokpi village instead of carrying out the same exercise in the hills to substantiate its charges.
While asserting that people are well aware of the root causes of the violence, PALM questioned the hidden agenda behind Assam Rifles allowing illegal immigrants to enter Manipur despite entrusted to guard the Myanmar border.
This proves that the Assam Rifles fails to execute their border guarding duty and accordingly the people of Manipur have no more trust on the force, PALM reasoned and urged both state and Central governments to replace Assam Rifles with another trustworthy and efficient Central force to guard Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur sector so as to effectively prevent influx of illegal immigrants into the state.
It also said that the people of Manipur have strong belief that normalcy would return once the Assam Rifles is removed from the state.
