Imphal, May 15 2022:
Kanglei Ima Lup (KIL) celebrated its 12th foundation day at Manipur Press Club here on Sunday.
Presided over by KIL president RK Sanahanbi, the function was attended by Lup advisor Ibotombi Khuman as chief guest and legal advisor advocate Naorem Binodini as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Ibotombi Khuman observed that womens participation in decision making process is comparatively low in Manipur.
Although representation of women at the Panchayat level is now around 30 per cent, it must be noted that there are only 5 women representatives in the state assembly.
Thus, there is the need to increase the representation of women in the decision -making process.
Ibotombi continued that Manipuri women have taken part in various issues plaguing the state including in the implementation of ILP.
With the aim of curbing the substance abuse in the state, womenfolk held up torches and launched movements.
They also did not shy away from standing against the atrocities committed by security forces under the shroud of AFSPA, 1958, the most iconic and memorable being the protest staged by the mothers in front of Kangla gate in 2004.The previous Congress government lift ed AFSPA from 7 assembly segments and the ruling BJP government followed suit by repealing the Act from more areas.
As such, AFSPA has been withdrawn from 6 districts of the state.
Meanwhile, there are reports that the union government is making provisions to completely repeal the draconian Act from the state.
All these developments are due to the brave efforts of Manipuri women, the KIL president contended.
Mentioning about the union government's efforts to resolve the Naga issue soon, Ibotombi highlighted concerns of the people on whether the resolution would affect the unity and territorial interests of Manipur.
If the interests are indeed affected, it would cause huge trouble and as such, all of us need to remain vigilant at all times.
In her speech, RK Sanahanbi recounted that KIL was formed with the objective of addressing the various issues of the state, including crimes against women, drug menace, etc.
She then remarked that Manipur is now reeling under the impact of drug menace.
There is no information on the whereabouts of drugs which were seized or award of any punishment to those involved in illegal drug trade.
Thus, there is the need for concerted effort to tackle this issue, she stated.
Later, as part of the function, simple gifts were presented to media persons.
