Handloom promotion Council, Manipur ceelebrated the 22nd State Handloom Day at Crafts Complex, Patsoi Part 1 on Saturday.
Addressing the event, Council's chief functionary Chingtam Luwang said that the State Handloom Day which falls on August 1 was postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic and celebrated belatedly on Saturday, While pointing out that the State Handloom Day used to be held every year on August 1 since 2000 prior to the installation of BJP-led Narendra Modi government, he said that with coming of the BJP government the day is being celebrated on August 7 since 2015-2016 consequently leading to the state celebrating the same event on different dates.
The Council will approach the Supreme Court with the plea for renaming the 'Hapdloom Day' celebrated at the state level, he added.
Claiming that Manipur might be the first to celebrate handloom day in the world, he continued that the Council has started preparing to celebrate handloom day on August 1 across the world.
The celebration was attended by Ministry of Textiles, Weavers Service Cenfre, Imphal assistant director Moirangthem Ibohal, National Design awardee Kshetrimayum Indira and Manipur Textiles Processing Institute officer on special duty K Kumarjit as presidium members.
Five weavers of the state were honoured by presenting cash and certificate on the occasion.
