Ukhrul, July 14 2014:
Taking serious note of the tense situation unfolding at Ukhrul district after the assassination of ADC Member M Ngalangzar on July 12 at Finch Corner, following which police commandos raided and ransacked the office of Wung Tangkhul Region (WTR), a public liaison office of NSCN-IM and arrested of eight cadres apart from seizure, arms, ammunition and documents, many Tangkhul civil society organisations have set an ultimatum for restoring peace in the district.
The Tangkhul social organization leaders today submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur through the Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul Modak Hriskeesh Arvind for immediate intervention against the State Government which has allegedly created a volatile situation thereby denying and depriving the Nagas' rights to live a peaceful and dignified life.
The State Government by deploying additional police commandos and IRB from Thoubal, Bishnupur and Imphal has created a panicky situation.
Today, an emergency meeting of all Tangkhul frontal organization was held for minute deliberation on the unfolding situation including violation of the ceasefire agreement between the GOI and NSCN-IM, which has been going on for the last 17 years to bring about a long lasting solution to the vexed Naga issue.
However, GOM promulgated 144 CrPC together with deployment of additional forces in the district driven by an apprehension of possible disturbances to the tranquillity in Ukhrul district headquarters after the murder of the ADC member.
The Tangkhul Naga people strongly denounced the promulgation of 144 CrPC at Ukhrul district and the same should be revoked immediately, said the Tangkhul frontal organisations.
Deployment of additional police commandos and IRB should be withdrawn immediately from the district.
The memorandum also demanded release of all eight arrested NSCN-IM cadres without any condition and the properties and document seized from the WTR office be returned immediately.
It also urged for restoration of the WTR office.
They asked the concerned authority to address their demands and grievances within 24 hours failing which, the civil organisations would be compelled to resort to any form of democratic civil action.
The Tangkhul Naga people (TNL), Women league TSL, Student Union TKS, Headmen's Association and Youth Council jointly signed the memorandum and reaffirmed their commitment and support to the ongoing Naga peace process.
