Steps taken towards self-reliance in food

Highlighting how the state often faces shortage and soaring prices of essential commodities in the event of blockades and bandhs along the two national highways, the district horticulture and soil conservation office has launched several initiatives aimed at achieving self-reliance in food production.
Speaking to The People's Chronicle, District horticulture and soil conservation officer, S Sushila Chanu highlighted that, under the first instalment of the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) 2024-25, as well as the Chief Minister's Initiative for Livelihood Revival of Unemployed Youths (CMILRUY), Rabi crop seeds have bedn distributed to over 500 farmers in Bishnupur district.
The seeds provided include varieties for garden pea, cabbage, cauliflower, carrot, spinach, and knol knol (turnip) .
Sushila further explained that farmers can avail the benefits under MIDH by registering on the dedicated portal.
Additionally, the CMILRUY programme aims to support both farmers and youth who have been affected by the ongoing crisis in the state.
She emphasised that the department is actively pursuing various schemes and initiatives to strengthen food security and reduce dependency on external supplies, which are often disrupted during blockades.
The officer urged farmers and youth to take full advantage of the available schemes, which aim to not only ensure food self-sufficiency but also provide livelihoods amidst the challenges posed by the current situation.
