Student bodies, CSOs pay tribute to Manipuri martyrs

Imphal, August 13 2022: Civil society organisations, students' bodies and local clubs organised Patriots' Day observance functions in different parts of the state on Saturday.

Speaking at the Patriots' Day event organised by Joint Students' Coordination Committee (JSCC), an apex body of AMSU, MSF, KSA and SUK, organised Patriots' Day at Imphal College multipurpose hall, Manipur University Department of Manipuri assistant professor Dr Naorem Sanatomba pointed out that there is no hard and fast rule that a person who is not a part of the political system cannot be a patriot.

While stressing that every individual, be it in any profession, should have the sense of patriotism, he recounted that at only 12 years old of age Sang-goisana and Chinglensana were martyred in the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891.He then urged the people particularly the younger generation and students to have the sense of patriotism so as to move towards a progressive society.

The observance was attended by Imphal College Department of Political Science head assistant professor RK Itocha and JSCC convenor Sukham Bidyananda as presidium members.

Floral tributes were paid to the photos of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

A debating competition centred on 'interrelation between waning of patriotic zeal in contemporary society and faulty education system' was also conducted as a part of the observance.

Meanwhile, Federal Students' Organisation, Kangleipak (FESOK) along with KHASIL, ULOM and Kanglei Pana observed 131st Patriots' Day at its Kakwa head office.

During the observance attended by KHASIL president Maibam Sunil, ULOM president Yumlembam Anil, Kanglei Pana member Maibam Abe and.

FESOK advisor Trongbam Premchand Singh as presidium members, rich tributes were paid to the photo of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

Political parties, institutions and local organisations also observed Patriots' Day in their respective premises by paying floral tributes to the Manipuri forefathers who sacrificed their lives for upholding the sovereign status of the then Manipur kingdom.

Manipur State Council CPI observed the day as Anti-Imperialist Day at Irawat Bhawan with Control Commission chairman Langol Iboyaima and state secretary Thoiren as the presidium members while Manipur People's Party (MPP) organised the observance function at its office premises near Imphal Pologround led by its president Chingkham Shamjai Singh, working president N Ojit Sing, vice president Krishnachandra, general secretaries, secretaries and members.

RK Sanatombi Devi College of Education (Asha Jina Complex, Imphal), UNACCO School (Khongman), Kanglei Enat Thang-Ta Shindam Shanglen (Kongpal Chanam Leikai), Imphal Art College Students' Union, and Manipur Youth & Student's Union, Porompat also observed Patriots' Day at their respective premises.

Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam, while speaking in an observance event organised by Lions Club International District 322D and Development Committee Lilong Chajing at Chajinglakpa Pureiromba EcoPark, opined that remembering the courage and supreme sacrifices of the freedom fighters will help imbibe sense of nationalism and patriotism among the youth.

Recounting the courage of Manipuri forefathers, who chose to fight the mighty British army even if they knew they will be defeated, the MLA urged the people to strive to emulate the indomitable spirit of the martyrs.

As part of the event, saplings were planted around the Chajinglakpa Pureiromba Eco-Park.

Directorate of Agriculture also observed the day with director N Gojendro, additional director Todinang Panmei and staffers offering floral tributes to the photo of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General.

As part of the programme and under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Indian national flag was hoisted at the office of the directorate near Sanjenthong.

Sangai Trust Foundation, Keibul Lamjao in collaboration with Keibul Lamjao Young Sports and Cultural Association, Keibul Awang, Social Educational Sports and Sagram Makha, Reorganising Sports and Cultural Association, Keibul Sagram Awang and Irabot Day Celebration Committee, Keibul Lamjao observed the Day at KLYSCA Club compound.

As part of the event, surface disinfectant spray sanitizers, pocket sanitizers, N-95 masks, 3-layer surgical masks and medicines were distributed to the locals free of cost.

In another observance event organised by Nongchup Khoijei Lup, Sheihek Sheireng Shei-pan Shemgat lup, Progressive Writers' Association Manipur, Asheilup, Iramdam Meeyamgi Apunba Khorjei Lup, Sheireng-ba Singgi Apunba Lup and Sahitya Thoupang Lup at JN Manipur Dance Academy auditorium, books dedicated to patriots of Manipur as well as 'Manipuri Khorirolda Khongjom Lal' were released.

Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters, Kangleipak also observed Patriots' Day at Manipur Press Club here on Saturday.

The observance function was attended by Justice Committee vice chairman H Somorendro, chief consultant H Ibotombi Khuman MU central museum curator in-charge Dr Mishala Ramkrishna, Kanglamei president Y Leirik Leima and Kanglei Ima Lup president RK Sanahanbi as presidium members.
