Imphal, March 13 2025:
In a significant step toward strengthening solid waste management in urban areas, the state government has introduced advanced equipment to improve waste processing and sustainability efforts.
As part of the ongoing 'Clean City' initiative led by the Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) Department, authorities have placed a renewed emphasis on managing hazardous waste, including glass materials.
During an event held at the City Convention Centre on Thursday, RK Dinesh Singh, principal secretary MAHUD, and Ng Uttam Singh, director MAHUD, handed over glass shredding machines to Thoubal Municipal Council and Mayang Imphal Municipal Council in the presence of officials from the municipal councils, MAHUD, and the Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA).
The newly distributed 'Glass Shredder' machines, procured by the MAHUD Directorate, have a processing capacity of up to 150 kg of glassware per hour and are powered by a 7.5 kW electric motor.
The equipment, valued at approximately Rs 9 lakh per unit (inclusive of installation, transportation, and GST), is designed to transform glass waste into silica sand through crushing and grinding.
This process offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional construction sands while minimising waste accumulation at dump sites.
In addition to the shredders, 100 sets of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) were provided to each municipal council.
These kits include helmets, earplugs, N95 face masks, safety glasses, and rubber gloves.
