Imphal, November 12 2024:
In a strongly worded post on X, Lok Sabha MP Dr Bimol Akoijam called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union home minister Amit Shah, defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and chief minister N Biren to take immediate action for the safety and release of women and children abducted by armed Kuki militants.
"Look at the faces of these women and children; they are citizens of this country.
Do whatever you must with all the resources under your command to ensure their safety and freedom," Dr Bimol wrote, adding that any harm to the civilians in captivity would make these leaders solely responsible.
In an interview with PTI too on Tuesday, Dr Bimol sharply criticised both the Central and state governments for their inept handling of the ongoing violence in the state.
He condemned the recent attacks and kidnappings carried out by armed groups, likening the situation to humanitarian crises seen in conflict zones such as Gaza.
He strongly urged the Central government to take immediate action to secure the release and safety of abducted civilians.
"Claims that peace and normalcy are returning to the state are lies.
I have said many times that this is an act of insincerity," Dr Bimol asserted.
He described the current state of affairs as turning Manipur into a "banana republic", underscoring the lawlessness and violence prevalent in the region.
He went on to equate such acts to terrorism, emphasising the severity of the situation.
Dr Bimol highlighted the plight of abducted civilians, including an 8-month-old, a 2.5-year-old child, women in early 20s & 30s, and 60s, who have been taken hostage.
"The government of India must ensure their safety and freedom from their abductors," he urged, warning that any harm befalling them would be squarely the responsibility of both the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the state administration under Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
He also pointed to Kuki MLAs, whom he accused of presiding over the violence for more than a year and a half.
The MP pledged to address the issue in the upcoming winter session of Parliament, which begins on November 25 .
"Absolutely, I will raise this issue in the Lower House.
As a representative of the people, it is my duty and responsibility," Dr Bimol affirmed.
He noted potential procedural challenges but expressed determination to find avenues to spotlight the crisis.
"I am still praying that these abducted women and children are returned safe and sound," he added.
