Khemchand mulls tribal market in Imphal

Along with inaugurating the Chinga Keithel at Singjamei Chingamakha on Friday, MAHUD minister Y Khemchand confided that MAHUD department is planning construction of a market complex exclusively for hill people in an Imphal area.
Speaking at the inauguration of Chinga Keithel, Y Khemchand informed that Chinga Keithel was constructed under Support to Urban Street Vendors Programme with the main objective to improve economy in urban area.
He said Chinga Keithel will provide opportunity to women of both hills and valley to trade their crops and vegetables.
He also said that MAHUD department is considering construction of a market complex in Imphal area where only people from hills could ply their wares.
Regarding the newly constructed Chinga Keithel, Y Khemchand said no one will be allowed to permanently occupy vending space at the market shed and any vendor can come and sell their products at the market shed.
He said that the market shed is for everyone and anyone can improve economy by doing small business at the market shed.
Commissioner (MAHUD) M Joy, who also attended the event, said plan for construction of Chinga Keithel started on December 13; 2023 and accordingly sanctioned fund for construction of the market shed under Support to Urban Street Vendors of Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM).
Under keen initiate of the MAHUD minister and local MLA, construction of the market shed was completed within one year, he maintained, adding that estimated cost of the project amounting more Rs 1 crore was sanctioned twice.
According to the commissioner, the 100X20 feet Chinga Keithel was constructed to accommodate 56 vendors.
Maring Union president Yaima Maring also attended the inauguration event and thanked MAHUD minister Y Khemchand for his announcement to provide vending slot at Chinga Keithel for Maring women.
He said that inconvenience faced by Maring women selling their products on dusty roadside will be addressed with availability of vending space at the new market shed.
Earlier in the day, Y Khemchand also inaugurated Centre for Urban Homeless at Porompat constructed by Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA) under NULM.
Y Khemchand said that the department is planning to shelter displaced people from Churachandpur and Moreh at the newly constructed centre having intake capacity of 50 families.
The inauguration event was also attended by MAHUD commissioner M Joy and MAHUD director and MUDA secretary Ng Bhogendro Meitei.
