Imphal, April 11 2022:
Civil Society Coalition for Human Rights in Manipur & the United Nations (CSCHR) has reportedly submitted a report on status of Human Rights scenario in Manipur, 4th Cycle to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) for tabling at the meeting of United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) .
Releasing the report during a press meet held at the office premises of Human Rights Alert (HRA) at Kwakeithel Thiyam Leikai, here on Monday, CSCHR convener Phulindro Konsam said that the report includes demand for ensuring human rights to the people of the state and justice to the families of victims, who were killed by security forces in fake encounters.
The report also mentioned about the forceful annexation of Manipur by India while making it clear that there was no valid merger agreement signed between India and Manipur, he said.
The convenor further said that CSCHR had submitted reports on the status of human rights scenario in Manipur at the UNHRC meets in 2011, 2014 and 2017 .
As a result, UN had asked India to scrap the draconian law AFSPA, deliver justice to the victims of extra-judicial killings and to bring political solution to the current political conflict in the state.
However, the Government of India is justifying imposition of AFSPA by citing international border and existence of terrorist organisations, he said.
It is unfortunate for the centre to say anything to justify their policy without recognising the human rights violation in the once sovereign nation Manipur.
People of the state want the Government of India to reinstate the pre-merger status of Manipur but not to get separated from India, he added.
