State observes World Suicide Prevention Day

As done across the globe, World Suicide Prevention Day - 2024 was observed in the state under the joint aegis of National Mental Health Programme, National Health Mission and Directorate of Health Services, Manipur at Hotel Imphal, here, on Tuesday.
Held under the theme "Changing the Narrative of Suicide", the observance was attended by Health and Family Welfare special secretary Hungyo Worshang and Health Services direc tor Dr O Sanahanbi Devi as chief guest and president respectively while additional director (Public Health) Dr Chambo Gonmei and SHS, NHM state mission director Dr M Dinesh Singh were guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Hungyo Worshang called upon parents not to exert pressure on their children when it comes to education as such parenting might overwhelm their wards and, in extreme cases, consider suicide.
Children often take life very seriously and may become deeply troubled, questioning the meaning and value of their existence.
During such critical moments, it is crucial for parents and loved ones to offer support and help them adopt a positive perspective, he emphasised.
The special secretary also stated that as depression predominantly affects middle-class and poorer families, there an urgent need to address this challenge.
One effective way to combat this issue is by spending quality time with the children, Hungyo said, while adding that such involvement can positively influence their mindset and help keep them from developing suicidal thoughts.
So, families and friends play a crucial role in preventing suicide attempts, he added.
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, also observed World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 on Tuesday with a series of impactful events under the theme "Changing the Narrative on Suicide".
According to RIMS Media Cell, the observance commenced with a cycle rally, flagged off by RIMS director professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma from the Jubilee Hall.
Led by medical superintendent professor N Sanjib Singh and Psychiatry Department head Dr S Gojendra Singh, the rally passed through Lamphel traffic island, Sanakeithel, Watham Leirak police outpost corner, ICAR, Lamphel police station and Officers' Club, mortuary gate before winding up at the starting point.
In his address, professor G Sunil highlighted the alarming global trend of increasing suicide rates, with particular concern for the student demographic.
He noted that the Director General of Health Services of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has recommended week-long observance of World Suicide Prevention Day across medical colleges including Dental College & Nursing College of RIMS.
The week-long activities at RIMS will include interactive sessions and various initiatives aimed at educating and engaging students on the critical issue of suicide prevention.
The central theme of these activities will be "Suicides are Preventable and let's talk," focusing on breaking the silence around mental health and encouraging open discussions, he said.
The director also highlighted gravity of the situation, referencing recent statistics which indicated that suicide claims approximately 720,000 lives globally each year.
He particularly stressed that among individuals aged 15 to 30, suicide is the third leading cause of death.
He concluded his address with a heartfelt message, urging the community to support individuals struggling with mental health challenges.
"We must all come forward to assist those in need of help.
Remember, support is available, and together, we can make a difference in preventing suicides," urged the director.
