Protest over eviction halts traffic at NH102

A large number of protestors on Friday came out on the NH102 section of Waithou Sangomsang to Tangjeng to protest against the eviction order issued by divisional forest officer (DFO) , Thoubal Forest Division on Friday itself, which halted the traffic along the national highway for some time.
The eviction order which was issued in continuation of DC Thoubal's directive on Thursday which cancelled all the Patta/Jamabandi and allotment orders in connection with illegal construction of houses within Waithou Protected Forest area, notified to all such encroachers to dismantle their buildings by 5 pm Saturday, failing which the government will dismantle them without giving prior information.
At about 4:30-5 pm, the protestors tried to block the national highway, but they were thwarted by personnel of District Police Thoubal which resulted in clashes between the police and protestors.
Police fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the agitators during which one Samankhan (31), son of (L) Serajaman of Usoipokoi Makha sustained injuries when a shell hit his leg and he was taken to Noor Hospital, Lilong for treatment.
Due to the protest, vehicular traffic was disrupted along the NH 102 for some time, but it resumed by late evening after additional police reinforcement was stationed in the area.
