Ukhrul, January 08 2025:
Continuing the tradition of their forefathers, volunteers from the Shirui Youth Club carried out an annual burning of the Shirui Kashong - the only habitat of the unique Shirui Lily - on Tuesday.
The event saw local youth, led by club president Yaomeikan Shangh, meticulously cover the entire grassland area on the mountain top.
"This annual burning is a tradition passed down from our forefathers," Shangh explained, adding that the same is essential for improving the health of the forest and its diverse flora and fauna.

Talking to The People's Chronicle, Shangh informed that the age old practice is aimed at rejuvenating the unique ecosystem of theKashong mountain range, and not destroying it which is what many believe.
He said the controlled burn serves multiple purposes.
"Primarily, it helps clear the area of unwanted shrubs and bushes and the invasive dwarf bamboo Machut, which pose a significant threat to the delicate Shirui Lily.
By removing these obstacles, the local community aims to ensure the continued growth and survival of this unique flower," he said.
The president continued that the practice is also a proactive measure against accidental wildfires, adding that the purpose of the practice is to minimise the risk of uncontrolled blazes that could devastate the forest.
He further mentioned that proper fire lines were made before setting the fire so as to avoid unintended damage to the forest.
"This is not just about protecting the Shirui Lily; it's about safeguarding our entire forest ecosystem," Shangh added.
Regarding the concern raised by some over the burning of the forest, he said that the practice is not a new adoption but has thrived for generations in the village.
"Through this practice of our forefathers, the Kashong forest has survived till date and as such the annual burning is vital in preserving the unique biodiversity of the Shirui Kashong grasslands," he explained.
