Imphal, December 07 2014:
As part of the campaign to encourage growing of more crops for self sufficient food production, the Irabot Foundation Manipur organized a program on distribution of seeds along with a discussion at Thiyam Konjil under Imphal-East yesterday.
A press statement of the Foundation said that another similar camp was also held yesterday at Senjam Chinsang area.
Meanwhile, the association strongly objected to the policy of the Government of India in which farmers have been imposed to pay 10 percent of the cost of mustard and pee seeds under the RKVY Scheme of the Directorate of Agriculture.
They expressed that the government must lift this unnecessary inconvenience on this farmers, while observing that it should be provided freely without exerting any pressure on these farmers.
The association also charged the Departments of Horticulture, Agriculture and Soil Conservation for failing to ensure transparency and timely distribution of these seeds without much publicity through the local media or other forms of promotional advertisements to the public.
They also stated that instead of extending support to understand the policies and programs provided by the government in the interest of the farmers of the state, various schemes have been under the control of certain individuals who in their own interest and benefit have misused the funds that are meant for agricultural development in the state.
Lastly they appealed to the government to drop the ten percent levy on the cost of the seeds as per the scheme of the government.
