Imphal, September 07 2024:
Inner Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has raised serious concerns about the underlying political motives driving the escalating ethnic violence in Manipur, following a deadly rocket attack in Moirang that claimed the life of a civilian and injured several others.
Bimol suggested that the intensification of violence is not merely a failure of governance but part of a broader agenda aimed at dividing Manipur along communal lines.
In a strongly worded post on X, Bimol criticised the Government of India (GoI) and the presence of over 60,000 central troops, questioning whether their prolonged inability or unwillingness to restore peace is indicative of a deliberate political strategy.
He warned that the ongoing unrest could be serving a larger plan to break Manipur into separate political or administrative units based on ethnicity, further deepening the state's divisions.
"Is this non-ending violence a question of inability or unwillingness of the GoI and its troops? But whichever way, it serves the violence of the political project to destroy Manipur!" Bimol stated.
The MP also alluded to the potential for international intervention, noting that the failure to control the violence could lead to calls for the deployment of UN Peacekeeping Forces, a move that would signal a serious indictment of the central government's handling of the crisis.
