Imphal, August 06 2024:
District administrations of Jiribam and Pherzawl districts have imposed night curfews in response to concerns over the potential influx of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
The curfews, ordered by the respective district magistrates, are part of precautionary measures aimed at maintaining law and order in the face of growing apprehensions about disturbances to public peace and security.
The separate orders, issued by DMs of the two districts come in the wake of an alert from the home department regarding the likelihood of illegal migrants entering the state from Bangladesh.
Moreover, restrictions will be enforced in the two districts, with prohibition on the assembly of five or more persons, carrying of firearms and other weapons, and movement of individuals outside their residences during the night.
Exceptions have been made for government agencies, security forces involved in law enforcement, and essential services.
There will be limited relaxation of these restrictions from 9 am to 3 pm in Jiribam and from 8 am to 4 pm in Pherzawl.
Jiribam senior SP and Pherzawl SP have been directed to strictly enforce the curfew and ensure the maintenance of law and order throughout the districts.
Residents seeking to conduct essential activities, such as marriage processions or funerals, must obtain prior permission from the district authorities.
The night curfew was imposed in response to a letter written to the DCs of the two districts by joint secretary (home) Peter Salam on Tuesday.
In the letter, the joint secretary (home) directed the imposition of night curfew in Jiribam and Pherzawl districts to prevent unauthorised entry across the state's borders.
The order highlighted need for strict vigilance by district police and security forces along the border to thwart any attempts of illegal migration.
The DCs have been tasked with ensuring that these measures are effectively implemented and are required to submit an action taken report to the home department.
