State environment conclave held to address climate change

A state environment conclave was held at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (HIT) in Mantripukhri, here, on Saturday, under the theme "Protect our Planet, Secure our Future" .
The event was jointly hosted by Students for Development (SFD), ABVP Manipur State Unit, Loktak Development Authority (LDA), the Department of Environment, Ecology & Climate Change, and IIIT Manipur.
The conclave featured three key sessions, which focused on pressing environmental issues, including climate action, renewable energy, plastic pollution through the 3 R s concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), sustainable living, soil conservation, landslide prevention, and the conservation of natural water bodies.
LDA chairman M Asnikumar attended the conclave as the chief guest.
Other notable dignitaries present included chief conservator of forests (Central Circle) and special secretary (forest, environment & climate change) Rk Amarjit Singh, forest department scientist N Bijen, divisional forest officer, central division N Ganesh, NIT Manipur associate professor Dr Th David, IIIT Manipur director Prof Krishnan Baskar, SFD, ABVP national in-charge Rahul Gaur, and environmental activist & ADAM Kakching secretary Surjit Kheshtrimayum.
In his keynote address, Asnikumar emphasised the urgent need to address climate change, calling it one of the most critical challenges facing humanity today.
He highlighted the far-reaching effects of climate change on ecosystems, economies, and communities, and stressed the importance of a collective response.
"Sustainable development offers a balanced approach, fostering economic progress while safeguarding the environment.
As climate change threatens our natural resources and the well-being of future generations, the need for sustainable practices becomes ever more critical," he stated.
Asnikumar also focused on the unique ecological challenges facing Manipur, a state renowned for its rich biodiversity.
He underscored the importance of conservation efforts to protect the region's fragile ecosystems while promoting sustainable economic growth.
"In Manipur, where the stakes are particularly high, sustainable development is not just necessary but critical," he said, adding that the engagement of local communities is essential to the success of long-term conservation efforts.
He invoked the popular proverb "Think Globally, Act Locally" and referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Vasudaiv Kutumbakam" (One Earth, One Family) to highlight the global and local significance of environmental conservation.
He commended SFD for organising the event and for their commitment to environmental advocacy and youth engagement.
He stressed the pivotal role that students play in addressing climate change, calling them "the key drivers of change" capable of raising awareness and inspiring collective action.
"Their creativity, passion, and commitment make them powerful advocates for a sustainable world," he remarked.
He further expressed gratitude to the organisers and pledged further collaboration to promote environmental awareness and conservation in the state.
The event, he said, would leave a lasting impact by empowering young leaders to take on the challenges of climate change and champion sustainable development.
The conclave, which saw active participation from students, academicians, environmental activists, and government officials, has reinforced the critical importance of climate action and sustainable practices for securing a better future for all.
