NGOs, institutions observe World Environment Day
Manipur's forefathers knew importance of nature conservation: RK Meghen

Various organisations observed World Environment Day in different parts of the state on Sunday.
Attending one of the observance programmes, environmentalist RK Meghen said that forefathers of Manipur had clear idea of the importance of conserving nature as is evident from the tradition of maintaining Umanglai Laikon (mini forest for sylvan deity) in every locality.
Speaking during observance of World Environment Day organised by Apunba Khorirolgee Malemgee Lup at Old Assembly museum hall here on Sunday, Meghen explained that the tradition of maintaining sylvan deity mangrove has not only religious and spiritual meaning but also has the idea Of conserving nature and forest cover and urged Umanglai committees to develop mini forest areas in their respective localities as a way of contributing in the fight against climate change.
As a part of the observance, Dr Naorem Sanatomba spoke on 'relation between environment and literature'; and IMAKHOL founder president RK Gunachandra spoke on 'World Environment Day in the view of criticism' as resource persons.
Later, a poetry meet was held with Bharatiya Dalit Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi national secretary Y Mahendra Kumar in the chair.
Rotary Club of Imphal, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Imphal West, JN Dance Academy, Khengjonglang Theatre, Banyan Repertory Theatre, Raag Tarang Mandal, Western Cultural Association and Panthoibi Natya Nupi Leela Lup (Keirao), Manipur Scout Union, Celin Digital, Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Manipur, Lilong Haoreibi College Environmental Club, NSS Units I, II & III, NCC and YRC along with Lilong Haoreibi College Alumni Association, Leishemlon Marup, alumni of Don Bosco School, Imphal 1986 Matric Batch, Offices of chief electoral officer (CEO), Manipur and district election officers, Ibotombi Institute of Education, Canchipur and Manipur Technical University Innovation Council also observed the Day through distribution of saplings, planting of saplings, organising elocution competition, quiz competition, awareness on plastic waste, etc.
Laventura, an eco-tour agency, along with adventure loving youth organised a tree plantation programme at Wakha Leima Ching, the final resting place of Chingsubam Akaba, on the occasion of World Environment Day on Sunday.
Bharat Vikas Parishad Linthoingambi Sakha under the aegis of Bharat Vikas Parishad, Manipur Prant donated utensils, kitchen items and food items to an old age home located at Mongsangei.
A100-year-old woman inmate of the home also planted a fruit tree to mark observance of World Environment Day observance.
Teaching, non-teaching staff, students and alumni associations of YK College in collaboration with Integrated Mega Tourist Development Cooperative Society Limited Khongjom planted saplings at Khongjom War Memorial Complex while Forest & Environment Development Organisation (FEDOM) organised a tree plantation programme to commemorate the dat.
