World Hospice & Palliative Care Day held

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2024 observance was jointly organised by Manipur University (MU) Health Centre and Palliative Care Society, Imphal (PCSI) at the Centre on Wednesday with MU vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh and PCSI resident Dr Ksh Manglem as chief guest and president respectively while PCSI vice president Dr Jugindra Sorokhaibam, NHM NCD Manipur SNO Dr Y Premchandra and MU Health Centre in-charge Dr Lamabam Pinky were guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof N Lokendra noted that Manipur is a rapidly evolving society compared to 20-30 years back when life and death were often viewed through a religious lens, with death attributed to one's karma' .
However, with advancements in education system, people's perspectives have shifted, and life and death now approached more scientifically.
He further highlighted that despite being a small state, the healthcare facilities are well-developed.
There are currently three privately-run cancer hospitals in the state, said Prof Lokendra, adding that since five years back, what was once referred to as Medical Science in the Manipur University curriculum has been recognised as Health Science, and the School of Medical Science renamed School of Health Sciences.
The vice chancellor also said that the observance emphasises significance of palliative care in the state, and reminder to all that no one can escape death, making it essential to offer both scientific and emotional support to help individuals pass away with dignity.
He also stressed the need for the Health Centre to provide palliative care to the public and assured necessary assistance in this regard.
