Imphal, December 29 2024:
A disturbing video has surfaced online showing a man, reportedly from the Kuki community, claiming responsibility for the shooting of Impact News video journalist L Kabichandra.
The journalist was injured in a firing incident at Thamnapokpi village in Imphal East district on Saturday morning while on duty.
According to a report published by Ukhrul Times, in the video, the individual, speaking in Manipuri (Meeteilon) with an accent, unapologetically warned the journalist against returning to the area, threatening to "shoot him in the head" if he did so again.
The man reportedly showed no remorse, instead stating that the journalist should consider himself "lucky" to have only been shot in the thigh and to still be alive.
Authorities are yet to verify the video's authenticity or identify the individual.
Press associations and human rights organisations have condemned the act, while calling on the government to take immediate steps to protect media persons and hold the perpetrators accountable.
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors Guild, Manipur (EGM) have strongly condemned the shooting and emphasised the need for greater safety measures for journalists working in the state.
They also thanked civil society organisations (CSOs) for their support for the injured journalist.
L Kabichandra is currently recovering from his injuries.
