Woman dies in suspension bridge collapse

Imphal, December 27 2024: A woman got killed after a suspension bridge constructed over Iril River, connecting Moirangkampu and Khurai Angom Mamang Leikai under Porompat police station, snapped on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Pukhrambam Bheigyabati (65) w/o Raghu of Khurai Angom Mamang Leikai.

According to reports, the suspension bridge had been around for a long time and as such, movement of light vehicles on the same prohibited.

Despite the prohibition, people from both sides continued to use the bridge to buy essentials or for urgent work.

On Friday around 7 am, Bheigyabati along with her husband and a young child were crossing the bridge as usual from Khurai Angom Mamang Leikai towards Moirangkampu.

Suddenly, one side of the bridge snapped and Bheigyabati fell into the water.

On receiving the news, nearby locals immediately rescued Bheigyabati from the river and rushed her to Raj Medicity.

However, the doctors declared her brought dead.
