Relief camps set up for flood-hit Thoubal families

As the level of water from overflown water bodies like Ikop, Kharung and Lousi continue to rise in different parts of Thoubal district and inundated several houses, the district administration has set up relief camps at four locations.
Apart from the residential areas, vast tract of agricultural lands and fish farms in Khangabok, Tekcham, Tentha and Leishangthem Khong areas among others, are also under flood water.
On Sunday, Thoubal deputy commissioner Ahanthem Subhash along with officials of the district administration and representatives of local club surveyed the flood-hit areas and relief camps to take stock of the situation.
Interacting with the media, DC Subhash said that the district administration is assessing impact of the flood triggered by the incessant rainfall the state has been experiencing in the past few days.
He acknowledged damage caused to agricultural and fish farms and said that the district agriculture officer and fishery officer are collecting data for fair compensation.
The deputy commissioner further informed media persons that the district administration has set up relief camps for flood affected people in Tekcham, Khangabok, Sangaiyumpham and Leishangthem Khong Manung, along with making efforts to set up more relief camps in view of the continuous rise in the level flood water.
Apart from the incessant rainfall, clogging of drains and siltation of canals are some other factors for the people facing flood situation, the DC said while urging local clubs, public and elected representatives to contribute in keeping drains and ditches free from blockages.
He also sought public cooperation to initiatives taken up by the district administration to address the issue.
At present, 90 families are taking shelter at Tekcham Upper Primary School relief camp while their cattle and poultry are being sheltered at the local community hall.
Sangaiyumpham relief camp is providing shelter to eight families, and Khangabok Lamlong Bazar relief camp catering to 31 families while Leishangthem Khong Manung community hall has around 30 families.
Number of families in these relief camps are expected to rise in the coming days.
