Imphal, January 24 2025:
While congratulating Ajay Kumar Bhalla on his appointment as the Governor of Manipur, the United Meitei-Pangal Committee (UMPC), Manipur has expressed optimism about his leadership in fostering collaborative efforts to restore peace and harmony in the state.
In a statement, UMPC informed that during a detailed discussion with the Governor on Friday, the Committee highlighted critical issues affecting the Meitei Pangal (Muslim) community and the state as a whole, while expressing the need to tackle misinformation, and the threat posed by divisive content on social media platforms.

The UMPC delegation urged the Governor to prioritise monitoring of hate speech and online incitement of violence, partner with social media companies to swiftly remove harmful contents, promote public awareness campaigns to enhance media literacy and critical thinking, so as to strengthen the response of the Manipur Police Cyber Crime department.
Reaffirming its commitment to fostering communal harmony and mutual respect among all communities, the Committee proposed conduct of inter-community dialogues, inclusive education programmes, initiatives for economic empowerment of the marginalised communities and community-led efforts promoting tolerance and reconciliation.
Regarding the unrest situation gripping the state since May 3, 2023, the Committee called for sustainable measures to restore stability and peaceful coexistence and proposed establishment of a State Level Peace Task Force with representation from all communities, launch of development projects that benefit all equally to reduce economic disparities, strengthen community policing to ensure safety and trust, and constitute a Conflict Resolution Commission for effective mediation of disputes.
Expressing gratitude to the Governor for his willingness to address the aforementioned concerns, the UMPC requested transparency from the state and central governments regarding initiatives taken to rebuild harmony since May 3, 2023, particularly from the Governor's office, the statement added.
