Imphal, July 20 2024:
In a move to address human-induced pressures on the Langol Reserved Forest (RF), Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Central Forest Division N Ganesh, along with Range Forest Officer (RFO) Sadar West Range Kiranjit Yumnam, and other forest staff, conducted a route march along the foothills of Langol RF on Saturday.
The march, which commenced from Tarung area and concluded at the Iroishemba beat office, aimed to assess and address critical issues threatening the forest ecosystem.
According to a statement released by DFO Central Forest Division, the Langol Reserved Forest and Langol Extension RF, established as per the Manipur State Durbar Resolution No 4 on November 2, 1938, encompass areas of 19.22 sq km and 2.05 sq km, respectively.
These forests fall under the jurisdiction of Sadar East and Sadar West Range, divided into Lamdeng and Khabam blocks.
During the march, the team highlighted several pressing concerns, including trespassing, littering, and small-scale mining.
These activities pose significant threats to the forest's integrity.
DFO Ganesh emphasised that any illegal occupation within the reserved forest contravenes Section 26 of the Indian Forest Act, 1927, the Manipur Forest Rules, 2021, and Section 2 of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980.Such encroachments are punishable under law.
The DFO also pointed out that many illegal Dags have been issued within the Langol Reserved Forest, which is against the provisions of the Acts and Rules.
Consequently, any Dag Chithas/ Patta issued inside the Langol Reserved Forest are null and void as per the state government's order dated May 31, 1994.To bolster the forest's protection, the team proposed establishing additional check-posts along the Langol RF boundaries.
This measure aims to monitor and prevent illegal activities in and around the area.
DFO Ganesh directed the RFOs to conduct a fresh assessment of encroachers to safeguard the forest.
The forest department remains steadfast in its dedication to the conservation and restoration of Langol RF.
Efforts are ongoing to protect the biodiversity and natural resources of the forest.
By implementing stricter monitoring measures and engaging local communities, the department aims to create a sustainable and secure environment for both wildlife and the people of Imphal, the statement said.
The forest department also appeals to the general public to report any new encroachments or illegal activities in the reserved forests to aid in conservation efforts.
