Imphal, December 19 2021:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Tongbram Mangibabu has dared the ruling BJP government to repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958 from some assembly segments like the Congress did from seven assembly segments of the state.
In connection with the 'Jan Arogya Abihyan' campaign of AICC, Youth Congress Committee and Thongju Block Congress Committee jointly organised a motor rally in Thongju AC on Sunday.
The rally was flagged off jointly by Mangibabu and S Presyojit, who is INCs intending candidate in Thongju AC.
Responding to questions from reporters regarding his opinion on AFSPA as one of the leaders of the previous Congress government, Mangibabu recounted that the then Congress government was able to repeal AFSPA from seven assembly segments under the present-day Imphal Municipal Corporation.
Although the party truly wanted to repeal the draconian Act from the entire state, time was not on its side and as such, could only be lift the disturbed area tag from the 7 assembly segments.
Initially, the people had firm belief that the BJP government would repeal the Act and the party also expressed its keen interests on the matter.
However, it is unfortunate to see the ruling BJP government's inability to do so during its term.
BJP should at least try to repeal the Act from some assembly segments like the Congress had done and reassure the people of its original intention to do so, the MPCC working president stressed.
Regarding the motor rally, Mangibabu said that the BJP-led NDA government is continuously spewing lies after lies.
The state BJP government is1 also following closely behind, while violating the democratic norms, constitution and secular nature ofthe country.
Prices of fuel and daily essential items have been hiked indiscriminately.
Thus, the rally is being carried out with the message of stopping support and staying vigilant against such a lying government.
In his speech, Presyojit remarked that the MLA and BJP Zilla Parishad members of Thongju AC are occupied with practicing politics on the media, while the people continue to suffer with numerous grievances.
