Manipur gets its first Supreme Court judge

In a historic milestone, President Draupadi Murmu has cleared the appointment of Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Justice N Kotiswar Singh, as a judge of the Supreme Court, making Kotiswar the first Supreme Court judge from Manipur.
Alongside him, Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Justice R Mahadevan has also been elevated to the apex court.
Their appointments bring the Supreme Court to its full strength of 34 judges.
Justice N Kotiswar was born on March 1, 1963, in Imphal, Manipur, to (Late) Justice N Ibotombi Singh, the first advocate general of Manipur and a former judge of the Gauhati High Court, and N Gomati Devi.
His legal journey began with practice at the Supreme Court of India before he shifted to the Gauhati High Court.
In 2008, he was designated as a senior advocate by the Gauhati High Court.
Justice Kotiswar's judicial career saw him being sworn in as an additional judge of the Gauhati High Court in 2011, becoming a permanent judge in 2012 .
Upon the establishment of the Manipur High Court in 2013, he was appointed as one of its first judges.
His tenure in Manipur was followed by a transfer back to the Gauhati High Court in 2018, where he continued to serve until his elevation as the Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in February 2023 .
Justice R Mahadevan, on the other hand, has been serving as Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court since May 2024.He completed his law degree at Madras Law College and enrolled as a lawyer in 1989 .
With a practice spanning over 25 years, Justice Mahadevan specialised in civil, criminal, and writ matters, with a focus on indirect taxes, customs, and Central Excise.
He served as the additional government pleader (Taxes) for the Government of Tamil Nadu and as additional central government standing counsel and senior panel counsel for the Government of India at the Madras High Court, handling over 9,000 cases.
Elevated as a judge of the Madras High Court in 2013, Justice Mahadevan's extensive experience and judicial acumen have earned him a place in the Supreme Court.
His appointment, along with Justice Kotiswar, completes the current bench strength of the Supreme Court, ensuring its full operational capacity.
On July 11, the Supreme Court collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, recommended the elevation of Justices N Kotiswar and R Mahadevan to the Supreme Court.
