Govt urged to upgrade Central library

State Central Library chief librarian Rk Urmila has drawn the attention of the state government towards the need for upgrading the State Central Library in line with the changing times.
She was speaking during the Library Day observed in connection with the 130th Birth Anniversary of Dr SR Ranganathan, also known as Father of Library Science, at State Central Library, Nityaipat Chuthek here on Friday.
The observance was organised jointly by State Central Library, Imphal and Manipur Library Association (MALA) .
Rk Urmila observed that people are now becoming more aware of the importance of library.
Over 200 students daily access the State Central Library while over 6000 students are registered with the library.
However, the Library is still missing requisite infrastructure and staff, which is putting pressure on the existing system.
To alleviate some of the stress, many trained hands are being utilised on temporary basis.
In addition, the library is in serious need of updated books.
As such, she appealed to the state government to help upgrade the library in the interest of students and general reading public.
The observance was also attended by Art and Culture director L Kishworjit; RIMS ex-librarian Dr N Giridhari Singh and MALA president K Chaoba.
Meanwhile, Students' Library Association (SLA) Kakching observed the 130th National Library Celebration 2022 at Grace Cottage Academy, Kakching on Friday.
The observance was attended by GCA founder Ksh Chaoba and YK College retired librarian Naorem Priyokumar as presidium members.
Speaking to the attending students, Priyokumar highlighted the important role played by libraries, and the present situation of libraries in the state.
Later, a poetry recitation programme for students was organised, followed by presentation of cultural performances and distribution of prizes.
