Meetei Eyek Erol Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has warned of launching intense agitation, even more serious than burning of Central Library, if the State Government does not re-consider its demand that the order issued by Board of Secondary Education Manipur on March 23 last for dropping Additional English from the syllabus of class IX and X should not be extended for another five years.
Talking to mediapersons in this connection at its office here today, Sadokpam Tomba, President of MEELAL, pointed out that the decision taken by BOSEM to drop Additional English from the syllabus of class IX from next year and further exclude it from the syllabus of class X from the following year, was arrived at after serious discussion among various experts of the State and also after a number of agitations have been launched.
He asserted that inclusion of Additional English in the school syllabus has hampered the growth of indigenous languages of the State.
So, the proposed agitation to be launched by MEELAL to press for dropping Additional English from the school syllabus altogether is not only to save the languages recognized by the Government, but also for the welfare of all indigenous languages in the State.
Paonam Thakaba, General Secretary of MEELAL, who was also present during the press conference, stated that the decision of the State Cabinet taken yesterday which was in contradiction to the earlier decision of BOSEM, and it is against the interest of the people of the State who love and value their own script and language more than their own lives.
If the State Cabinet does not review its decision, MEELAL is all set to launch various forms of agitation which is even more intense than burning of the Central Library, he warned.
