Imphal, December 11 2024:
As in other parts of the world, United Meitei Pangal Committee (UMPC), Manipur observed International Human Rights Day 2024 at Jame Masjid, Lilong Bazar on Tuesday.
The observance held under the theme 'Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now' was attended by UMPC president MV Muheiyuddin, advisor Md Hashimuddin Meinam, legal advisor advocate Zakir Hussain and Jame Masjid, Lilong 'Pes' imam Alhaj Qauri Quyamuddin as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, UMPC general secretary Raees Ahamed Tampak termed as unfortunate the total disregard of human rights of the people of Manipur by both the central and state governments, while opting to remain silent and allowing the 19-month-long conflict in the state to persist.
Arguing that the government's failure to act proves that over 30 lakhs people of the state are being treated as second-class citizens, he asserted that the government's incongruent stand on the crisis indicate a complete lack of understanding regarding the origins of the turmoil.
Raees further demanded that the central and state governments restore peace in the state at the earliest and ensure protection of everyone's rights.
Chipping in, UMPC president Muheiyuddin noted that the ongoing crisis has affected all the communities of the state making the future bleak for everyone.
He demanded that authorities concerned immediately resolve the conflict, failing which will be seen as suppression of human rights.
Muheiyuddin then announced that the Committee is planning to organise large scale awareness programme on human rights.
Group Centre, CRPF, Langjing, Imphal, also organised a Human Rights programme on the occasion of International Human Rights Day under the leadership of DIGP Anil Kumar Bhardwaj, on Tuesday.
Commandant Padmashri N Kunjarani Devi, and assistant commandant (Min) Martin Raju, also participated in the event aimed at fostering awareness about the importance of human rights.
According to a statement issued by DIG, GC CRPF, the programme featured a lecture highlighting the concept of universal natural rights, transcending legal jurisdictions, ethnicity, and other localised factors such as gender or social norms.
Addressing the gathering of officers and Jawans, speakers elaborated on the fundamental set of standards that guarantee a dignified life.
It was emphasised that these rights form the "foundation of freedom, justice, and peace", not only in Manipur but across the world.
Padmashri Kunjarani stressed that human rights protect individuals from abuse and discrimination, ensuring equal opportunities for physical and intellectual growth.
"Human rights empower individuals to speak out against social injustices and evil practices prevailing in society," she added, underlining the crucial role of awareness in safeguarding these rights, the statement added.
