Escaped rape accused arrested

Imphal, August 11 2022: A joint team of Bishnupur commando unit and district police led by additional SP (Ops) Roni Mayengbam on Thursday arrested a rape accused, who had escaped from Bishnupur police station lock up on the intervening night of July 12 and 13 .

The arrested rape accused has been identified as Irom Chingkheinganba Meitei (27), son of Irom Brojen Singh of Tangjeng Sabal Maning Leikai.

He was arrested by Women police station Bishnupur under section 224 of IPC read with 120B of IPC in connection with a POCSO case.

According to police, they received a cred ible input from 16 AR and corroborated from their source about the presence of Irom Chingkheinganba, who had escaped from lock up, in and around Thoubal Athokpam on Thursday at around 3.30 pm.

The combined team immediately rushed and searched for him in the adjoining areas of Thoubal Athokpam Mayai Leikai.

He was spotted near Athokpam Junior High School and on seeing the police he fled from the area by jumping over the wall of the school and ran towards Arong River.

He jumped into the river and swam across it.

Meanwhile, the combined team pursued him from different directions and was able to overpower and get hold of him at the river bank.

He was apprehended from the river bank opposite to Athokpam Junior High School and brought to Bishnupur police station for taking up further necessary action, it added.
