In connection with the observance of the 36th Drivers' Day on January 14 at MG Avenue, All Manipur Road Transport and Motor Workers' Union has informed that all drivers of commercial vehicles will abstain from work on the day.
In a press meet held at the Union's office in MG Avenue on Friday, Union secretary Mai-mom Anil Meitei said that observance is being organised to remember the drivers who lost thier lives in the line of duty.
He then appealed to the families of around 314 deceased drivers to attend the observance, while also urging the general public for the same.
According to Maimom, the Union has been upholding the people's trust on the drivers to bring in essential items and goods to the state.
He, however, bemoaned that drivers continue to be looked down upon in spite of their immense service to the public.
He recounted the brutal tragedies and fatal incidents suffered by many drivers, highlighting the immense risks they face daily.
He implored people from both hills and valley to show compassion and respect for drivers.
