Imphal, September 08 2022:
Observing that the students studying in Manipur seem to have developed an inferiority complex in front of students who had studied outside the state, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba said that time has come to change this mindset.
Maharaj Bodhchandra College celebrated its 53rd foundation day at the auditorium of the college, Palace Compound, here, on Thursday.
In his speech as the chief guest, Leishemba Sanajaoba recalled that MB College was established by his father to address inconveniences faced by the students of the state.
The MP revealed that he also studied at the college.
He then said that Manipur has many good schools offering quality education till Class X or XII.
However, there is a trend of students opting to studying outside the state after Class XII, which raises the question whether the students chose not to study in any of the state colleges out of assumption that the colleges are not capable or not up to the standard.
Although there is no problem with anyone wanting to study outside the state, Sanajaoba stressed the need for examining the issue, considering majority of the state's students are from lower middle-class families.
As such, concerted efforts need to be made to ensure that the students studying in the state's colleges have access to the same level of education as taught outside the state, he asserted.
With NEP 2020, it has become important for students to be taught in their mother tongues as students would be able to learn and study better.
People study to gain knowledge, while with regard to language, any language can be learned.
Thus, time has come to discuss the inferiority complex or rather the stereotype we have developed that students who have studied in Manipur are inferior to those who have studied outside the state.
Although it would be impossible to change this mindset immediately, we can surely try to change the same albeit slowly, he remarked.
Sanajaoba then assured of looking into the deficiencies of the College including shifting the science stream and meeting the requisite infrastructures of the College, while urging for concerted efforts to ensure the longevity and prominence of the college well into the future.
As part of the function, Ngangom Thoithoiba Meitei, who obtained the First Class First in BA 6th Semester Manipuri Honours and Latasana Wangkhem, who bagged the 9th position in the BA 6th Semester examination 2020-21 conducted by MU, were awarded cash prizes and certificates.
Presided over by MB College principal Dr M Chandra, the function was attended by University and Higher Education additional director P Shantikumar and MB College English Department head Dr RK Indira as guests of honour.
