RIMS Hospital conducts free paediatric cardiac surgeries

Imphal, December 07 2024:
The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, in partnership with prestigious international institutes, launched an initiative offering free heart surgeries for children under 18 years of age, in June 2024 .
To date, 12 children with congenital heart disease have undergone successful surgeries, said a press release issued on Saturday by RIMS media cell.
According to the release, from December 2-4, 2024, a specialised surgical camp was conducted at the North-East Regional Paediatric Cardiothoracic Centre, RIMS, Imphal, by the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Unit in collaboration with Healing Little Hearts, UK .
The team from Healing Little Hearts included Dr Shyamadeep Borgohain (paediatric cardiac surgeon), Dr Snehal M Kulkarni (paediatric cardiologist and intensivist), and Dr Shivaji Mali (cardiac anaesthetist, Fortis Hospital, Mumbai) .
During the camp, the team screened children with cardiac conditions and performed surgeries on five patients, three of whom presented with complex congenital heart defects requiring open-heart surgery.
All procedures and diagnostic investigations were provided free of charge, facilitated by the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram Sunder the National Health Mission , Manipur.
Families with children under 18 years in need of cardiac surgery are encouraged to avail of this programme, it added.
In the meantime, RIMS thanked Dr Sanjiv Nichani, founder and lead intensivist of Healing Little Hearts, UK, along with the entire Healing Little Hearts team, as well as the medical staff and volunteers, whose invaluable contributions were instrumental in the success of these surgeries.
It also extended its special thanks to RBSK NHM Manipur for funding the treatment and for setting up the state-of-the-art Cardiothoracic Operation Theatre at RIMS.
