Ukhrul, June 05 2022:
Stating that earth has no replacement, DFO Kamjong Forest Division SW Suisa urged each and every member of the community to do their mite in restoring the Mother Earth.
Speaking at the observance of World Environment Day jointly organised by NGO Yotakhi Initiatives and Kam jong Forest Division at PTPO Multipurpose Hall, Phungyar on Sunday, DFO Suisa cautioned that the way human beings treat the nature and all of its natural components will spell disaster for the Mother Earth.
"If this happens, then humanity will be doomed because there is no replacement for earth - the only place for life", he stated.
Underscoring the importance of the nature, the DFO noted that the sun, air, soil, water, forest and wildlife are natural components that sustain life and without them humanity cannot survive on earth.
"We tend to take them for granted, but they are indispensable for sustenance of our life.
Unless mankind make amends, the earth will be devastated sooner than we can imagine", he cautioned.
DFO Suisa then appealed to the participants to take part in addressing the global concern of regenerating the environment to save the Mother Earth.
Planting trees is one simple action that anyone can do to help mitigate the environmental degradation.
With growing awareness among the people, tree plantation activities have continued in different parts of the district, he observed.
Reminding the participants of an old saying, the DFO said that "the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, but if you have put it off till date, then the second-best time is now".
Delivering the keynote address, Yotakhi Initiatives secretary Yangmi Ningshen expressed gratitude to DFO Kamjong and his officials for according priority on Phungyar in taking up plantation programme.
He mentioned that people in the district are traditionally engaged in jhum cultivation by clearing huge forest covers each year.
"But we believe that awareness on environmental concern is gradually growing among our people, that's why, we see less jhum cultivation now a days", he exuded.
Speaking on the Biblical voice on environment and ecology, UBC, Phungyar pastor Rev Dr Jajo Somi said that according to the Bible, God created the earth and entrusted it to mankind to rule over the nature and all the things in it - both living and non-living.
"But the problem we see today is because mankind has misinterpreted this role of stewardship and has started acting like the master of the nature.
This is the root cause of destruction caused to the nature and the earth", he noted.
In his speech, PTPO, Phungyar chairman AS Thanmi conveyed that climate change is the result of human actions that have far reaching impacts on the environment.
He said that the impact of global warming could be witnessed in a small place like Phungyar.
"For instance, years back, banana could not grow here in Phungyar, but now it is growing as the tern-perature is rising", he cited.
He suggested that the community should take up extensive and intensive organic farming to reclaim the natural fertility of the soil.
"Let us stop using of insecticide, pesticides and all chemicals in order to make our villages a chemical free land," he exhorted.
As part of the observance, DFO Suisa led a tree plantation drive which was conducted at the premises of Phungyar police station, SDO office, Primary Health Centre and other important points of the sub-division.
The event held under the theme 'Only One Earth', was also attended by range forest officer Kamjong Nimshim R Kaping; ROOF secretary reverend Ahao Chithung; Green Hills Church pastor Shimre ingam Jajo and government officials, school authorities, students and people from different neighbouring villages.
