Imphal, October 03 2024:
Seasoned politician Okram Joy has suggested that instead of offering floral tributes to Maharaja Gambhir Singh and other martyrs who defended Manipur during the Seven Years Devastation as a formality, these historical events should be incorporated in the school syllabus so that the future generations remember and honour their sacrifices.
Speaking at the Langban Tarpon/Heisoi Katpa ritual held at Maharaja Gambhir Singh Memorial complex, Langthabal organised by Chahi 7 Khuntakpa and Maharaj Gambhir Singh Ningsingjaba Marup Manipur, on Wednesday, O Joy likened the Seven Years of Devastation as a genocide aimed at wiping out the Meetei community.
While criticising rulers of the then Manipuri kingdom for their silence and inaction even as the Meeteis faced near-extinction, Joy hailed the valour and sacrifices of Maharaj Gambhir Singh, Maharaj Nara Singh, Herachandra and other martyrs for eventually saving Manipur and making the Meeteis to stand tall.
Stating that the tribute event could not be held on a grander scale due to the ongoing Unrest situation in the state, he expressed elation that many came to honour the martyred Manipuri forefathers as well as pray for victory of the Meeteis against those elements plotting to ethnic cleansing of the community since May 3 year.
Among others, the commemorative function was also attended by former Khurai MLA Dr Ng Bijoy, former Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA RK Anand, former Yaiskul MLA E Chand and Nupi Samaj president Th Ramani.
