Dr Lorho moots markets for hill farmers in city

Lok Sabha MP Dr S Lorho Pfoze has said that setting up markets for farmers from different hill districts in and around Imphal city will not only address the hardships faced by these farmers but it could also help in narrowing the hill valley divide.
Speaking at the 7th Mao-Imphal Market Day-2022 observance organised by Mao-Imphal Market Coordination Committee held at its temporary shed located on the eastern side of DMU campus on Sunday, the Lok Sabha MP recalled how they heard story of brotherhood and unity between the hill and valley people in the past.
Unfortunately, waves of discrimination became the major cause of distrust, disunity among the communities, he opined, while hastening to add that those days of discrimination have become history and unity, bond of brotherhood return among the communities.
Mao-Imphal Keithel is also one of the catalysts that bring closer the hill and valley people and it could be observed as a divine intervention to bring back the earlier bond, he said, and stressed that unity, trust and cordial relationship could bring development in the society.
There was a time when people in the valley cast away hill people as if they were untouchables.
In those times, farmers from the hill suffered a lot.
But, there is no such situation today, he said and drew the attention of authorities concerned for setting up cold storage units and permanent markets instead of temporary facilities.
Similar arrangements could also be made for farmers from other hill districts, he said.
Mao-Imphal Market Coordination Committee chairman Besii Pfoze Mao, vice-chairman Ksh Chingkhei Luwang, Wangoi MLA Kh Loken and IMC Ward No 4 corporator L Arenkumar also attended the observance.
